The Costa Calida (meaning the hot coast) is located in the south east corner of Spain and includes the beautiful cities of Murcia and Cartagena. Just like the Costa de Almeria, this coastal area is very up and coming, but still retains its distinctly traditional feel. The World Health Organisation recently declared the province of Murcia the cleanest area in Spain with the least industrial pollution.

There are two colourful Murcia festivals on offer whilst on holiday in Costa Calida, they are the Holy Week and the spring Battle of Flowers. Cartagena is the most historic of Costa Calida's towns dating back to 221BC. Its museum has many interesting artefacts commemorating the Carthaginian and Roman periods of rule on this part of the coast. The town was also a Mediterranean port for more than two thousand years, surrounded by fortifications it encloses numerous fine archaeological remains.
Another highlight of a holiday in Costa Calida is The Mar Menor, Europe's biggest salt-water lagoon created by the bit of land called La Manga del Mar Menor, which is believed to have healing properties/hotels for complaints such as rheumatism and arthritis. This shallow lagoon is a 170 square metre natural water park providing safe bathing for children and an ideal training base for those wanting to learn a water sport.
Waterskiing, windsurfing and sailing dominate the water activities whilst on holiday in Costa Calida, but inland there are plenty of opportunities for golf including the famous luxury La Manga Club. The climate of almost perpetual sunshine makes the region a year-round favourite with golfers of all standards. The average annual temperature here is 20C, the area has less than 40 days of rain a year and the sea temperature rarely falls below 18C. Temperatures in the summer peak reach well into the 30C range but are tempered by cooling sea breezes.
Golf Guide in Costa del Sol
Like the rest of Spain, eating out is inexpensive and the food is varied with burgers, fish and chips, and English breakfasts for the less adventurous as well as excellent restaurants offering traditional Spanish menus.
The flying time is around two hours visitors can fly into Murcia's San Javier airport or the major international airport of Alicante, an hour's drive to the north.
