Turkey holidays
Turkey is where west meets east; where Europe ends and Asia begins. Yet it is only a comfortable three hours and 30 minutes flying time from the UK with the option of scheduled services to the major cities of Istanbul and Ankara or charter flights to the western regional airport at Izmir. Turkey borders three bodies of water; the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black seas, but it is mainly the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts to the west and south of the country respectively that attract the British visitors.
The current Turkish holiday trend among Britons is to go for stay-put holidays in the main resort areas where summer temperatures average 25C, and then to take excursions into the hinterland to absorb the history and culture where it lives unsparingly. The most popular resort areas are Bodrum, Marmaris and Kusadasi, which can sometimes become crowded in the high season, but holidaymakers can escape to the fishing village of Datca or the crystal-clear lagoon and beach at Olu Deniz for more of a relaxed atmosphere.
The beautiful Aegean Coast is packed with history and, although said to be the original site of the ancient city of Troy, there are Greek and Roman ruins at Ephesus and Hierapolis. Pamukkale is a town popular for the benefits of its thermal springs. The Mediterranean coast is a mix of beaches, history and wildlife with Antalya a popular seaside resort, and historic Roman cities at Perge and Side. Alanya, further east along the coast, also has fine, clean beaches, whilst Belek has the added interest for nature lovers in the sightings of rare turtles and hundreds of bird species. Istanbul lies either side of the Bosphorus Straits and thus spans two continents, Europe and Asia. It is home to the fabulous Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque and the St Sophia Byzantine Cathedral.
Traditional British food tastes are catered for in the seaside resorts with famous Turkish dishes such as doner and shish kebabs. The local cuisine majors on lamb, but menus also feature aubergines, red mullet and swordfish.
Shopping in the bazaars that most of the towns and cities possess is a unique experience. Bargains there are leather goods, inlaid wood, spices and jewellery, but expect to indulge in some light-hearted haggling.
